This mid-to-late Edo period ressei-style menpō was crafted by the renowned Myōchin school. At first glance, it may seem like a typical mask. However, upon closer inspection, it becomes evident that this piece is bespoke and custom-made with unique design elements. One notable feature is the ue-ba teeth, intentionally crafted with missing teeth, giving the mask a pirate-like, distinctive look.
The mask also has all the necessary helmet cord retention features, including yadome flanges that sweep down to a set of oda-yori-kugi posts. Additionally, it features a decorative tsuya-otoshi-no-kuda pipe, traditionally used to funnel sweat away during battle.
The craftsmanship is exceptional, with a long, sculpted chin and detailed uchidashi-shiwa wrinkles beneath the eyes, adding to the mask’s lifelike quality. The tare throat guard is notably longer than usual and is made of lacquered nerikawa in the iyozane style, providing protection and aesthetic appeal.
The lower plate, or muna-zuri-no-ita, is adorned with two rows of decorative hishinui stitches and a single row of uname, enhancing its visual complexity and craftsmanship.
This is a rare and impressive menpō, showcasing the skill and artistry for which the Myōchin school is famous.
