The Gusoku Editions

Many years ago, a fellow dealer authored a remarkable series of reference books known as the Gusoku Series. Though only three editions were ever published, these works were groundbreaking for their time, offering an unprecedented look into the world of Japanese armour. Their depth and insight filled a gap in historical understanding that had never been addressed before. Inspired by this legacy, the author once suggested that I follow in their footsteps. I’m proud to announce that I am doing just that, continuing the TORABA tradition with a fresh vision.

In 2025, I plan to launch a new collection titled the Gusoku Editions. This series will include at least four volumes, each offering a deep dive into Japanese armour. These books will be available in both digital and print formats, ensuring they reach enthusiasts and scholars alike. My hope is that the Gusoku Editions will honour the legacy of the original series while carving a new path for the appreciation and study of Japanese armour in the west.

SAMURAI
Way of the Gun

“Samurai – The Way of the Gun” is a groundbreaking book currently in production. It’s the first of its kind. When firearms were introduced to Japan in the mid-sixteenth century, their integration into battlefield warfare was slow at first. The first significant use of firearms occurred at the Battle of Nagashino, where Oda forces decimated the Takeda army. This book focuses on the evolution of Japanese armour from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, illustrating the dynamic changes in armour manufacturing as firearms became more powerful. As weapons advanced, armour had to provide greater protection for its wearers. “Samurai – The Way of the Gun” delves into this fascinating period of transformation, offering a comprehensive exploration of how the rise of firearms reshaped the samurai’s iconic armour and battlefield tactics.

This book is an ongoing project. Items featured can be purchased via our Antiques for Sale page when available.
